Role Model?

Sports stars get paid millions of dollars a year to perform on the field and serve as role models to America's youth. Young children go to sporting events to see their favorite players and meanwhile their parents dish out a substantial amount to make this happen. Within the last day, former MLB star Jose Offerman lost his cool while playing in a minor league game and hit both the catcher and pitcher with his bat, fracturing the pitchers wrist. Are these the kind of people we want our children looking up to? Why are athletes like these who have a disregard for a civil society and who cannot control their anger considered role models? Why are people who work hard for a living, are model citizens and show respect overlooked? The answer is simple. In the materialistic world we live in, we look up to people who have money regardless of how they earned it. People need to realize that we are all equal and no person regardless of how much money he/she makes or how they dress is better than a regular hard working individual.

Well Actually they are in the minor leagues so no one Really sees them as role models, and if someone in the Major Leagues Would of done that they would never let them play in the league again, so this whole thing really is nonsense sorry :P GO FS ! lol

Perhaps you do not follow baseball. Jose Offerman was a long time major leaguer, spending time with the Red Sox and a few other teams. Regardless of whether it was a major league or minor league incident, it was uncalled for. If you believe that dignity and the ability to control yourself is reserved for only major leaguers, then you too need a reality check.

I don't agree that sports stars are paid millions to perform and serve as role models - they are paid to perform, period. If they fill the stadiums with their performances, then they are doing their jobs. It should be the responsibility of parents to not support these games by attending with their children if the performances do not meet their standards.

Baseball was even more popular before the salaries became so large. Back in the 20's, 30's 40's and 50's it was the king of sports and every kid wanted to be a ball player but the pay was not all that great. Baseball is a game almost every kid plays and can relate to. The MLB stars become "heores" because they are the best at something that the kids can identify with. I don't think it is anything more sinister than that.

As far as this clown with the bat, he's a jerk, unfortunately there are lots of jerks in every profession. There are jerk doctors and ministers too that cause even more damage in other ways.

Maybe encourage your kids to look outside of American sports for inspiration? Cricket and rugby have generally excellent role models and are paid peanuts compared to America's sportstars or those of soccer - though there are exceptions.
